Urban Fashionis a second name of Hip Hop Fashion. Urban Fashion is an exclusive style of Dress derived from African-American youth. It complements the style, attitude and expressions of the Urban Culture.Urban Fashion has changed a great deal during its history up till today. It is a significant part of famous fashion across the planet and for all ethnicities.
During the 1980s, urban fashion icons wore clothing items such as brightly colored name-brand tracksuits, sheepskin and leather bomber jackets, Clark’s shoes, and sneakers. The shoes were usually Pro-Ked, Puma, Converse’s Chuck Taylor All-stars, and Adidas Superstars often with oversized shoelaces. Popular haircuts ranged Jheri curl to the early-1990s hi-top fade. Large eye glasses and accessories with names embellished on them were also very famous. Men wore heavy gold chains and women wore large gold earrings. The heavy jewelry was suggestive of prestige and wealth. But in mid 1990s gold was replaced with platinum often embedded with diamonds, which then became a major heart throb in jewelry. Gucci was a famous brand at that time, working in the jewelry sector.
Many famous brands have added their talents to enhance the sportswear of Urban fashion. Tommy Hilfiger was the most distinguished brand in 1990’s sportswear. Other famous brands included Polo Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Nautica, and DKNY. The most famous trend that emerged from the urban sportswear fashion was the Throwback Jersey.
Other brands, such as Nike FUBU, Reebok Pro-Keds, Adidas, Ecko Unlimited, Mecca USA, Lugz, Roca wear, harputs by Gus Harput, Boss Jeans by IG Design, and Enyce, worked on Urban street wear.
The Urban Fashion trends of the 2000schanged constantly. During these years there was a heavy celebrity influence among fashion trends. Throughout these years many fashion trends from the 80s and early 90s were made significant again. We see the rebirth of the door knocker earring and form fitting jeans for males and also see bright colors being used and cartoon graphic print hoodies made popular by famous artists and producers. Females went crazy for high heels in all different forms and many ideas were crossed and we saw things like the open toed boot.
The main criticism of Urban Fashion is that it is very expensive and common working man cannot afford it, and with the media flaunting every bit of urban fashion he feels a restlessness to own an asset of the popular fashion. Enemy summarized the mentality of Urban Fashion and some low-income youths as “Man, I work at McDonald’s, but in order for me to feel good about myself I got to get a gold chain or I got to get a fly car in order to impress a sister or whatever.” This frustration then arouses heads to hustle, steal, or rob and blast shots for slyness.
Apart from its major criticism Urban Fashion Industry is still working successfully with an ever increasing demand.
